The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat following a by-election held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in the Greater Accra Region.
The poll was conducted to fill the vacancy created after the passing of the area’s Member of Parliament earlier this year. Voting took place across 113 polling stations, with security personnel deployed throughout the constituency to ensure a smooth and orderly process.
Out of 49,966 registered voters, a total of 17,048 ballots were cast, representing a turnout of approximately 34 percent. Of the ballots cast, 16,928 were valid, while 120 were rejected.
Observers attributed the relatively low turnout partly to the ongoing Ramadan period, as the constituency has a significant Muslim population.

At the close of polls and collation of results, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) declared NDC candidate Baba Jamal the winner.
The certified results are as follows:
Baba Jamal (NDC) – 10,884 votes (63%)
Yusif Baba Ali (NPP) – 4,009 votes (23%)
Mohammed Umaru Sanda (Independent) – 1,885 votes (11%)
Ibrahim Iddrisu (Liberal Party of Ghana) – 43 votes
David Kanor (Independent) – 104 votes
The NDC candidate secured a commanding lead over his closest rival from the New Patriotic Party (NPP), maintaining the party’s traditional dominance in the constituency.
Security agencies reported no major incidents throughout the voting and counting process. Party agents were present at polling stations during the exercise, and the process was widely described as calm and transparent.
Ayawaso East has long been considered a stronghold of the NDC, and the outcome reinforces the party’s grip on the seat. Political analysts say the result could provide early signals about voter mobilisation patterns in urban constituencies ahead of future national contests.
Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn in as Member of Parliament in the coming days to resume representation of the constituency in Parliament.
