The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Fanteakwa South District, Mercy Korang, has launched a major poultry support initiative aimed at boosting local food production and creating employment opportunities for farmers in the district.
Under the programme, the District Assembly is distributing 10,000 poultry birds, popularly known as “Akokɔtikitiki,” together with poultry feed to about 200 farmers across the district.
The initiative forms part of the campaign promises of John Dramani Mahama during the 2024 Ghanaian general election, which the government has pledged to implement to support farmers and strengthen the country’s agricultural sector.
Speaking at the launch of the programme at Esther Poultry Farm, Hon. Korang explained that the initiative, known as the Akokɔtikitiki Poultry Initiative, is designed to increase meat and egg production while creating sustainable livelihoods for farmers in the district.

She noted that the District Agriculture Directorate and agricultural extension officers will play a critical role in ensuring the success of the programme by monitoring and guiding beneficiary farmers.
According to her, agricultural officers will regularly visit the farms to provide technical support and supervise the rearing of the birds to ensure that farmers adhere to proper poultry management practices.
Hon. Korang further stated that she will personally lead the monitoring team to ensure the programme achieves its intended objectives.
She also advised beneficiary farmers not to undermine the government’s Akokɔtikitiki policy but rather take advantage of the opportunity to expand their poultry businesses.
The DCE expressed optimism that the initiative will strengthen poultry farming in the district, increase the availability of poultry products, and help identify outstanding poultry farmers within the district in the near future.
She added that with consistent supervision by agricultural extension officers and the commitment of farmers, the programme is expected to significantly boost poultry production and stimulate economic activity in the district.
