The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Fanteakwa South, Mercy Korang, has called on residents to prioritise environmental protection and education as essential pillars for Ghana’s development.

She made the appeal during the district-level celebration of Ghana’s Ghana Independence Day held at Osino Old Town Park, under the national theme “Restoring Prosperity, Renewing Hope.”

Addressing participants, Hon. Korang emphasised the need for communities to protect the environment by replacing trees that are cut down and ensuring responsible mining practices. She noted that safeguarding the environment is crucial to sustaining agriculture and guaranteeing food security for the country.

According to the DCE, environmental protection must remain a shared responsibility if Ghana is to maintain its capacity to produce enough food to feed its growing population.

Hon. Korang also underscored the critical role of education in national development, stressing that Ghana cannot achieve meaningful progress without investing in quality learning.

In line with the vision of John Dramani Mahama to strengthen the country’s education sector, she announced that the Fanteakwa South District Assembly had distributed 10,000 sanitary pads to female students from Basic Five to Senior High School across various schools in the district. The initiative, she explained, is aimed at helping girls stay in school and improving their academic performance.

She further revealed that the district actively participated in the “My First Day at School” programme, where officials visited several schools to motivate pupils and present them with teaching and learning materials to support their studies.

The DCE also highlighted a number of ongoing infrastructure projects designed to improve the learning environment in the district. These include renovation works at Abompe Salvation School, a building project at Bomodwen Presby School, a six-unit classroom block at Dome, three-unit classroom blocks at Dadetsuna and Subrima, as well as a six-unit kindergarten classroom block at Ayesubesia.

Hon. Korang reaffirmed the district assembly’s commitment to improving education and community development, noting that the initiatives form part of broader efforts to restore prosperity and renew hope among Ghanaians.
