Nursing Colleges to Award Degrees Under Major Health Sector Reforms – Hon. Akandoh

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced a comprehensive set of reforms aimed at transforming nursing and midwifery education in Ghana, including plans to upgrade training colleges into degree-awarding institutions.


The announcement was made during the inauguration of Advisory Boards for Health Training Institutions, where the Minister outlined government’s strategy to build a more skilled and responsive healthcare workforce capable of addressing the country’s evolving health needs.


According to him, more than 40 health training institutions are expected to roll out degree programmes as part of the reforms. In addition, new specialised courses in critical care, oncology, and emergency nursing will be introduced to strengthen the delivery of specialist healthcare services nationwide.

To enhance the quality of teaching, the Minister disclosed that government will provide PhD scholarships for tutors in health training institutions. He also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving student welfare through the consistent payment of trainee allowances and the implementation of the No-Fee-Stress policy.

He further called on members of the newly inaugurated Advisory Boards to provide strong leadership and effective oversight to ensure high standards, accountability, and the long-term development of health training institutions across the country.
