Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs has arrived in Latvia for a two-day official visit aimed at seeking clarity and justice over the circumstances surrounding the death of Ghanaian student, Nana Agyei Ahyia.
Upon arrival, the Minister expressed appreciation to Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Her Excellency Baiba Braže, for the warm reception and the productive bilateral engagements held earlier in the day. The visit, the Minister noted, follows a commitment made to Ghanaians to personally pursue answers regarding the tragic and unresolved death of the Ghanaian student.

According to the Minister, the Latvian government has given firm assurances of its full cooperation with Ghana in efforts to establish the truth and ensure justice in the matter.
The Minister is leading a six-member delegation comprising senior directors from Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a forensic expert and a pathologist. Two family members of the deceased, who were invited to join the delegation, were unable to travel as scheduled due to visa processing delays. However, the Minister disclosed that their visas were issued today and they are expected to arrive later tonight to join the delegation the following morning.

It was further clarified that all members of the delegation, including the family representatives and technical experts, are fully funded by the Ministry. The Minister also dismissed allegations of extortion and the issuance of fake travel tickets, describing them as unfounded and unsupported by evidence.
The delegation is expected to continue its engagements on Monday with scheduled meetings with Latvia’s Ministries of the Interior and Education, as well as investigators handling the case.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare, rights and dignity of Ghanaians both at home and abroad.
