Coach Kwesi Appiah made a great return as Black Stars coach as he led his lads to hammer Ethiopia 5-0 in Ghana’s first 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
Two quick goals from Asamoah Gyan and John Boye, a screamer from Ebenezer Ofori and a brace from debutant Raphael Dwamena humbled the Ethiopians at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday 11 July.
The skipper of the side, Gyan, led by example to open the scoring in the 10th minute. Gyan headed home a cross from debutant Thomas Agyapong which bounced off an Ethiopian defender before finding the net to give the Black Stars an early lead.
Four minutes later, defender John Boye got Ghana’s second and his fifth international goal when he somehow looped the ball beyond the outstretched arms of the Ethiopian goalie despite being surrounded by three defenders in the box. He received the assist from Raphael Dwamena who spotted him with a header in the penalty box.
Debutant Ebenezer Ofori found the back of the net with a left-footed screamer three minutes to the end of the first 45 minutes which sent the fans into complete ecstasy.
Raphael Dwamena got his debut and Ghana’s fourth goal with a simple tap in from a rebound two minutes into the second half after the Ethiopian goalie had saved an initial shot from Andre Ayew. Dwamena got his brace in a similar fashion after the goalie spilled a loose ball in the 67th minute.
Ethiopia came close to reduce the tally, but a long range shot heading for goal in the 90th minute was brilliantly parried away by goalie Richard Ofori.
