The Government of Ghana has summoned the South African High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, following reports of xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians residing in South Africa.

The move comes amid growing concerns over the safety and security of Ghanaian nationals, after reports and viral videos emerged showing incidents of violence, intimidation, and harassment against foreign residents in parts of South Africa.

In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration said the meeting with the envoy was intended to formally convey Ghana’s “strong concern” over the developments.

One widely circulated incident in KwaZulu-Natal Province reportedly showed a Ghanaian legal resident being confronted, asked to prove his immigration status, and ordered to leave the country.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described such conduct as unacceptable, stressing that it undermines the dignity and rights of law-abiding residents.
He also raised concerns about escalating tensions in affected areas, with reports suggesting that some foreign nationals have been advised to remain indoors for their safety.

Although no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the latest incidents, the Minister referenced previous episodes of xenophobic violence in South Africa that resulted in loss of life and destruction of property, cautioning against any recurrence.

He further emphasised the long-standing historical and diplomatic ties between Ghana and South Africa, rooted in solidarity during the anti-apartheid struggle.
Ghana has consequently lodged a formal protest and called for immediate measures to ensure the protection of its citizens and other foreign nationals, including enhanced security interventions and assurances that such incidents will not recur.

In response, the Acting High Commissioner acknowledged Ghana’s concerns and assured that the South African government is taking steps to address the situation. He noted that law enforcement agencies are closely monitoring developments and working to restore calm while ensuring accountability for those responsible.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaians abroad and pledged continued diplomatic engagement to guarantee their safety and protection.
