Ghana has intensified efforts to advance a sustainable Blue Economy following high-level discussions with the Royal Norwegian Embassy on the proposed Ocean for Development Programme.

The meeting, held in Accra, involved a delegation led by His Excellency Dr. John Mikal Kvistad. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable ocean governance under the framework of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.

Key areas of focus during the discussions included sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, marine ecosystem protection, research and innovation, blue finance, inclusion, and maritime security—particularly efforts to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

Officials indicated that the programme will be demand-driven and aligned with Ghana’s national development priorities, ensuring effective coordination and long-term impact.

The two parties agreed to commence technical engagements and develop a comprehensive implementation framework. This will begin with an inception phase ahead of the signing of a formal agreement.
The partnership is expected to play a pivotal role in transforming Ghana’s marine and inland water resources into engines of sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity.
