Accra, May 5, 2026 — The Ministry of Health Ghana has responded to a demonstration held earlier today at the Weija Paediatric Hospital, assuring the public that steps are being taken to resolve challenges delaying the facility’s operationalisation.
In a statement issued by the Ministry’s spokesperson, Tony Goodman, officials confirmed that the hospital project—funded by the World Bank—commenced in 2023 and was originally scheduled for completion in December 2025.
However, the project encountered setbacks in 2024 after the World Bank flagged procurement irregularities, including concerns over significantly inflated costs of medical equipment—reportedly priced up to eleven times their actual value.

Following these findings, the Bank declined to settle certain outstanding payments linked to the project.
Despite these challenges, the Ministry indicated it had taken proactive steps to engage stakeholders and was prepared to commission the facility for public use. This process was, however, halted by the contractor, who insisted that all pending financial and contractual issues be resolved before granting access to the hospital.
The Ministry emphasised the strategic importance of the Weija Paediatric Hospital in strengthening Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly in delivering specialised medical services for children.
Authorities say ongoing engagements with all relevant parties are aimed at reaching a resolution that will allow the hospital to become fully operational.
The Ministry has therefore appealed to residents of Weija and the general public to remain calm and patient as efforts continue to ensure the timely completion and opening of the facility.
