MTN Ghana Marks 30 Years of Transformation and Digital Progress

The Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Stephen Blewett, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to driving Ghana’s digital transformation as the telecom giant launched activities to celebrate its 30th anniversary under the theme: “30 Years of Progress, Powered by You.”

Speaking at the media launch held at MTN House in Accra, Mr. Blewett described the milestone as more than a corporate anniversary, calling it “a Ghanaian story” built on three decades of connection, innovation and opportunity.
Addressing government officials, media practitioners, partners, staff and customers, the MTN Ghana CEO said the company’s success has been shaped by the trust and loyalty of Ghanaians who see MTN not merely as a telecom provider, but as a partner in their daily lives.

He recounted a memorable encounter involving a farmer who attempted to stop an MTN-branded pickup vehicle for assistance, insisting that as an MTN customer, he partly owned the vehicle because “his money helped buy it.” According to Mr. Blewett, the incident reflects the strong emotional connection many Ghanaians have with the MTN brand.
“Ghanaians do not see MTN as distant infrastructure. They see it as their network, their platform, their enabler,” he stated.
Reflecting on the company’s journey since the introduction of GSM services in Ghana in 1996, Mr. Blewett noted that telecommunications has evolved from a luxury to an essential service that powers communication, commerce and inclusion.
He highlighted the launch of Mobile Money (MoMo) in 2009 as one of the company’s most transformative contributions to Ghana’s economy, describing it as a platform that expanded access to financial services for millions of people.
“MoMo was not just a product — it was access. Access to the formal economy, safety, dignity and growth,” he said.

Mr. Blewett also referenced the critical role MTN Ghana played during the COVID-19 pandemic, when digital connectivity became essential for education, healthcare delivery, businesses and family support systems.
He praised the dedication of engineers, agents and frontline workers who ensured network stability during the crisis.
On MTN Ghana’s economic and social impact, the CEO said the company remains one of Ghana’s largest contributors to public revenue while continuing to invest heavily in network expansion and digital infrastructure.
Through the MTN Ghana Foundation, the company has also invested millions of cedis into education, healthcare, youth empowerment and skills development initiatives across the country.

Looking ahead, Mr. Blewett said Ghana’s future would be driven by digital innovation, with young people playing a central role in shaping the next phase of growth.
