The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has praised MTN Ghana for its transformative contribution to Ghana’s telecommunications and digital economy over the past three decades.

Speaking at the official launch of MTN Ghana’s 30th Anniversary celebrations at the MTN House Media Centre on Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Minister described the telecom giant as a model of long-term foreign direct investment and a key partner in Ghana’s socio-economic development.

Addressing executives, staff, members of the media and stakeholders, Sam George said MTN’s journey since entering the Ghanaian market in 1996 reflects the evolution of the country’s ICT sector from basic telephony to a modern digital economy.

According to him, MTN’s continuous investments in network expansion, fibre deployment and technological innovation have significantly improved communication, digital access and financial inclusion across the country.

He noted that MTN’s recent commitment to invest US$1 billion into nationwide network infrastructure demonstrates the company’s confidence in Ghana’s future and commitment to supporting national development priorities.

“MTN Ghana stands as a strong example of what positive, long-term foreign direct investment should represent,” he stated.

The Minister highlighted the company’s pioneering role in introducing GSM technology, launching Mobile Money services, enabling roaming services and listing on the Ghana Stock Exchange.

He said Mobile Money, in particular, has transformed financial inclusion by empowering millions of Ghanaians, especially informal sector workers, SMEs, women and young people, to participate actively in the formal economy.

Sam George also acknowledged the role successive governments, regulators and private sector players have played in shaping Ghana’s telecommunications industry through policy reforms, market liberalisation and digitalisation initiatives.

He referenced the contribution of President John Dramani Mahama during his tenure as Communications Minister and later as the first Board Chairman of the National Communications Authority between 1998 and 2001.

The Minister further commended MTN Ghana for its significant contribution to domestic revenue mobilisation, employment creation and enterprise development through its extensive ecosystem of agents, vendors and contractors.

While celebrating the achievements of the telecom industry, Sam George also identified key challenges facing the sector, including affordable digital access, infrastructure resilience, cybersecurity, data protection, digital skills development and environmental sustainability.

He stressed the need for stronger collaboration between government, regulators and industry players to address these challenges and unlock opportunities in emerging technologies such as 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud services, data analytics and the Internet of Things.

He disclosed that Ghana’s recently launched National Artificial Intelligence Strategy is aimed at ensuring inclusive technological growth while aligning innovation with local values and culture.

Concluding his address, the Minister congratulated MTN Ghana’s Board, management, staff, partners and customers for their contribution to Ghana’s digital transformation over the past 30 years.

“MTN’s thirty-year journey in Ghana tells a powerful story that long-term commitment, aligned with national priorities, can transform economies and lives,” he said.

He officially declared MTN Ghana’s 30th Anniversary celebrations launched.
