The Greater Accra Regional Minister has held a stakeholder engagement with the leadership and members of the 31st December Makola Market Women’s Association following recent agitations and public demonstrations within the market enclave.

According to the Minister, the meeting became necessary after videos circulating on social media highlighted growing grievances among traders and concerns about conditions in the market.

The engagement, he explained, was aimed at listening to the concerns of the market women, identifying the root causes of the challenges and working collaboratively to develop sustainable and mutually beneficial solutions.

The Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) to the welfare of traders, describing market women as the backbone of the local economy whose wellbeing is critical to regional stability and economic growth.

He further disclosed that government is investing in the 24-Hour Economy Market initiative to address persistent infrastructure deficits and congestion within major trading centres. The initiative, he noted, seeks to expand commercial infrastructure through the development of modern markets capable of accommodating more traders and supporting continuous economic activity.

The Minister also assured stakeholders that the administration is implementing comprehensive structural measures to address the bottlenecks identified during the engagement. These interventions, he said, are intended to permanently resolve disputes, prevent future tensions and ensure lasting peace and order within the Makola market area.

He appealed to all parties to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as the interventions are rolled out.

“Together, we will build a more resilient, equitable and prosperous trading environment for all,” the Minister stated.
