The Environmental Protection Authority has announced a nationwide ban on styrofoam products, popularly known as takeaway packs, effective January 1, 2027, as part of efforts to reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment.

The decision follows a policy announcement made by the President, John Dramani Mahama during the 2025 World Environment Day celebration on June 5, where government outlined plans to phase out styrofoam products across the country.

According to the EPA, the ban will affect the production, importation, distribution, sale, and use of all expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products used for commercial and daily activities. These include takeaway food packs, disposable cups and plates, foam containers used by restaurants and chop bars, as well as packaging and cushioning materials.

The Authority further explained that the restriction will also cover polystyrene ceiling materials, insulation products, foam mattresses, and other related items used by consumers.

However, styrofoam products intended for medical, laboratory, scientific, and diagnostic purposes will be exempted from the ban, subject to approval by regulators.
The EPA has therefore advised manufacturers, importers, retailers, food vendors, hospitality operators, and institutions that depend on styrofoam products to begin switching to safer and environmentally friendly alternatives before the deadline.
To support the transition process, the Authority said it will organise nationwide stakeholder engagements, public education campaigns, and technical consultations in the coming months. The EPA also plans to strengthen inspections, compliance monitoring, and enforcement measures ahead of the implementation date.

The Authority disclosed that it will collaborate with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs), customs officials, port authorities, and industry regulators to ensure the ban is fully enforced across the country from January 2027.

The EPA also encouraged the public to embrace reusable and recyclable packaging options, stressing that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility for all citizens.
