Ministry of Fisheries Pledges Support for Sea Women’s Hub Initiative to Empower Young Women in Maritime Sector

The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting gender inclusion and youth empowerment within Ghana’s maritime and blue economy sectors following a courtesy call by the Sea Women’s Hub Initiative.

The engagement focused on exploring avenues for collaboration to expand opportunities for young women, particularly Senior High School students, within the maritime industry. The Sea Women’s Hub Initiative is dedicated to encouraging young women to pursue careers in the sector through mentorship, advocacy, skills development, and awareness creation.

During the meeting, representatives of the Initiative outlined their vision of addressing gender disparities in maritime professions while contributing to the growth and sustainability of Ghana’s blue economy. They highlighted plans to increase awareness of career opportunities within the sector, provide mentorship and role models for aspiring young women, facilitate capacity-building programmes, and foster partnerships across the maritime and fisheries industries.

The delegation also sought the Ministry’s support and endorsement in strengthening engagement with key government agencies and stakeholders at both the national and international levels to advance the Initiative’s objectives.

Responding to the presentation, the Ministry commended the Sea Women’s Hub Initiative for its dedication and progress in promoting inclusivity within Ghana’s maritime space. The Ministry acknowledged the importance of empowering women and girls to actively participate in sectors traditionally dominated by men and emphasized the significant role such efforts play in advancing sustainable development within the blue economy.

The Ministry further reaffirmed its readiness to work closely with the Initiative to enhance access, visibility, and opportunities for young women in the fisheries and maritime sectors, underscoring its commitment to supporting programmes that promote gender equality, skills development, and economic empowerment.

The meeting marks a significant step toward strengthening partnerships aimed at increasing female participation in Ghana’s fisheries, maritime, and blue economy industries.
