The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA) has commenced a joint review mission with the African Development Bank (AfDB) to assess the implementation progress of the Greater Accra Sustainable Sanitation and Livelihoods Improvement Project (GASSLIP).
The review meeting, held on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Ministry’s conference room in Accra, sought to evaluate key achievements, address implementation challenges, and identify priority actions ahead of the project’s scheduled completion in November 2027.
Addressing participants at the meeting, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, praised the AfDB for its sustained support towards improving sanitation and urban livelihoods in Ghana.

He disclosed that the US$53.86 million project has achieved significant milestones, including the construction of more than 5,000 household toilet facilities benefiting over 50,000 residents across the Greater Accra Region. Additionally, approximately 60 institutional Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities have been provided for schools and other public institutions.
According to the Minister, work on decentralized sewer systems is progressing steadily in communities such as Accra Central and Korle Gonno. He also noted that waste management equipment, including skip trucks and motorized tricycles, has been supplied to beneficiary Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to enhance waste collection and sanitation services.
Despite the progress made, Hon. Ibrahim acknowledged several implementation challenges, including delays in payments, land acquisition difficulties, and contractor cash-flow constraints. He stressed the importance of continued collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the successful completion of the project.
The AfDB delegation commended the Ministry for its strong administrative leadership and commitment to the project’s implementation. The team emphasized that securing land for the proposed landfill site remains a critical priority to facilitate the next phase of project activities.
The GASSLIP project, jointly funded by the African Development Bank and the Government of Ghana, is aimed at improving sanitation, waste management, and livelihood opportunities in selected urban communities within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area.
