Ghana is set to deploy 400 nurses to Jamaica under a new bilateral agreement aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the Caribbean nation.

The announcement was made by Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa following the revival of the Ghana, Jamaica Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which reconvened after a 21-year hiatus.

According to the minister, the agreement forms part of broader efforts to deepen cooperation between the two countries and will create employment opportunities for Ghanaian healthcare professionals while supporting Jamaica’s health sector.

In addition to the healthcare partnership, Ghana and Jamaica signed agreements to enhance collaboration in the areas of defence and tourism. Discussions are also underway for the deployment of Ghanaian teachers to Jamaica, with negotiations expected to be concluded by August 2026.

Mr. Ablakwa further commended Jamaica for backing Ghana’s United Nations resolution that recognises transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.

As part of the renewed diplomatic engagement, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has invited President John Dramani Mahama to attend this year’s Jamaican National Day celebrations as a special guest of honour.

The latest agreements underscore the commitment of both countries to strengthening their historic relationship and expanding cooperation across key sectors.
