The Ghana Railway Development Authority (GRDA) has expressed concern over the growing encroachment on sections of the Tema–Mpakadan railway line, where some residents have reportedly transformed parts of the corridor into resting areas and makeshift living spaces.

Speaking in an interview with Adom News, GRDA’s Head of Communications, Hajia Sahadatu Alhassan said the reality on the ground is far more troubling than recent viral videos showing people sitting and sleeping on chairs placed directly on the railway tracks.

“The situation is even worse than what was seen in the video. Some people have turned portions of the railway line into places where they sit, rest, and even sleep, despite the obvious dangers involved,” she stated.

According to her, the Authority has consistently carried out public education campaigns in communities along the railway corridor, including awareness programmes in mosques and other public gathering places. However, many residents continue to ignore the safety warnings.

She stressed that the illegal occupation of the railway corridor poses a serious threat to both public safety and railway operations.

Hajia Sahadatu Alhassan warned that the GRDA will intensify enforcement efforts and ensure that offenders face legal consequences.

“Going forward, anyone found occupying or loitering on the railway line will be arrested and handed over to the appropriate authorities for prosecution,” she said.

She further disclosed that one person has already lost their life along the railway corridor. She explained that compensation demands from the deceased’s family could not be considered because the victim had been unlawfully occupying a restricted railway area.

Despite ongoing sensitisation campaigns, the GRDA says encroachment on the railway line remains a persistent challenge, endangering lives and compromising the safety of railway operations.
