The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has strongly condemned the physical assault of a senior staff midwife by relatives of a patient at Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the incident as a criminal act that threatens the safety and dignity of healthcare workers.

In a statement issued on June 5, 2026, the Association expressed grave concern over the attack, emphasizing that nurses and midwives should not be subjected to intimidation, threats, harassment, or physical violence while carrying out their professional duties.

“We unequivocally condemn this uncultured, unacceptable, and criminal act of violence against a healthcare professional whose only duty was to provide care and support to patients and their families,” the statement said.

The GRNMA stressed that healthcare facilities must remain safe spaces for healing and care, not environments where healthcare professionals fear for their personal safety.

Call for Improved Security Measures

The Association called on the management of Community 22 Polyclinic to immediately strengthen security arrangements within the facility to prevent similar incidents.

Among the measures proposed are enhanced security presence at critical service points, strict visitor management systems, rapid response protocols for violent incidents, installation of surveillance systems, and regular security risk assessments.

National Action Against Workplace Violence

The GRNMA further urged the Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service, Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG), teaching hospitals, and other health sector agencies to prioritize the protection of nurses and midwives nationwide.

The Association is demanding the development and enforcement of a national policy on workplace violence prevention in healthcare settings, increased investment in security infrastructure, effective reporting and support mechanisms for victims, and stringent sanctions against perpetrators.

Ratification of ILO Convention 190

The Association also renewed calls for the Government of Ghana to ratify and implement the International Labour Organization’s Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work.

According to the GRNMA, the convention provides a comprehensive framework for preventing and addressing workplace violence and harassment, including within healthcare environments.

Police Urged to Act Swiftly

The Association called on the Community 22 Police Station to expedite investigations into the incident and ensure that all persons responsible are arrested, prosecuted, and brought to justice.

It noted that swift action would not only secure justice for the victim but also serve as a deterrent to future acts of violence against healthcare workers.

Appeal to the Public and Healthcare Workers

The GRNMA appealed to the public to refrain from violence, threats, and aggression against nurses and midwives, urging individuals to use established complaint and grievance procedures when concerns arise.

The Association also encouraged nurses and midwives across the country to remain calm and professional while investigations continue, assuring members that it remains committed to pursuing justice and advocating for stronger workplace protections.

“An attack on one nurse or midwife is an attack on the entire nursing and midwifery profession,” the statement emphasized.

The statement was jointly signed by GRNMA President, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, and General Secretary, Dr. David Tenkorang-Twum.
