Accra, June 8, 2026 – Key stakeholders in Ghana’s sanitation sector have called for sustainable financing and modern waste treatment infrastructure to tackle the growing waste disposal challenges facing the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA).

The call was made during a high-level Stakeholder Dialogue on Landfill and Waste Management held on Monday at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra. The event, themed “Alleviating Waste Disposal Crisis in Greater Accra,” brought together government officials, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), sanitation experts, development partners, and private sector operators to discuss practical and long-term solutions for effective waste management.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, emphasized the urgent need for increased investment in engineered waste treatment facilities to keep pace with rapid urbanisation and population growth.

According to the Minister, sustainable financing is essential for maintaining efficient sanitation services, protecting public health, and ensuring environmental sustainability. He urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to prioritize sanitation management while strengthening partnerships with private sector service providers.

Participants at the dialogue advocated a shift from landfill-dependent waste disposal systems to integrated waste management approaches that promote recycling, composting, and resource recovery, with landfills serving only as a last-resort option.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by stakeholders to deepen collaboration, explore innovative financing models, and invest in sustainable waste management solutions aimed at keeping Greater Accra clean, resilient, and environmentally safe.

The dialogue forms part of ongoing efforts to address Ghana’s sanitation challenges and build a more sustainable waste management system capable of meeting the demands of a rapidly growing urban population.
