The Abuakwa South Municipal Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Mr. Aikins Ofori, has expressed confidence that the introduction of cooperative mining will significantly help eliminate illegal mining activities, popularly known as galamsey, across Ghana.

According to Mr. Ofori, the initiative will involve key regulatory bodies, including NADMO, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Municipal Security Councils (MUSEC), to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement of mining regulations.

He explained that the cooperative mining model aligns with the vision of President John Dramani Mahama to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices while protecting the environment from further destruction.

Mr. Ofori noted that under the proposed system, miners would operate within organized cooperatives under strict supervision, reducing illegal activities that have led to the degradation of farmlands, forests, and water bodies.
