Construction Begins For Koforidua Youth And Sports Center

Minister of Youth and Sports, Isaac Asiamah, has cut sod for the construction of a Youth Resource Center in Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region.

This follows the commencement of construction works for a similar facility in Ho last week.

The facility, expected to be completed by November 2018, will cost an estimated $2.4m.

The multi-purpose facility is part of government’s efforts to address the sports infrastructure deficit in the country and will be constructed across all ten regions of the country.

Addressing the chiefs and people of the Eastern Region at a short ceremony, Sports Minister Isaac Asiamah, said the Eastern Region deserved better than what they currently have.

“I can’t believe that after all these years, the Eastern Region cannot even boast of a single proper sports facility, not even a single tartan track in this region.

It is unacceptable. We will put up a facility here that will make you all proud,” he said.

The facility, when completed, will house an 8-lane athletic track, a FIFA standard pitch, career counseling center, basketball and handball courts as well as a multi-purpose sports hall, a restaurant and an ICT center.

The project is being undertaken at the site of the Koforidua Sports stadium and will take 9 months to complete.
