Plastic Rice Hits Ghanaian Market

A new fear that has gripped the hearts of the people of Ghana is the fear about the quality of the rice. In a state where rice is the staple diet, the stories about plastic rice has sparked panic among the masses. Though the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), has downplayed reports of the influx of some fake rice purported to be ‘plastic rice’ on the Ghanaian market.

A video of the supposed plastic rice was circulating on social media platforms cautioning people against the purchase of that particular brand of rice.

But speaking to Citi News, the Public Relations Officer of the FDA, James Lartey, indicated that the authority’s investigations across the country have shown no trace of such ‘plastic rice’ on the market.

“We went around checking and investigating and up till now, in any sample of the said rice, we are not seeing that the thing is on the market.”

Mr. Lartey suggested the possibility of the allegations emanating from the competitors in the rice retail market, but urged the public to report to the FDA if they indeed come across it.

“We are just appealing to the public, if you have a sample or you have seen somebody selling it, just get a sample, bring it to us or call us and tell us where the product is. We will move immediately and deal with it,” he said.

Well just as the issue was about the rest, speaking to Radio1 Michael Agyapong in an interview Mr. Agyei Paddy who is the victim of plastic rice said his daughter called her this afternoon that the rice they have been eaten is made of plastic, to his surprise her daughter recorded hitting some of the cooked rice on the floor with the rice bouncing back.

“This is clear that the rice is made of plastic”,he told Agyapong. He further explain that two days after eating the rice there was rashes all over his body and his wife fell sick and according to the doctor his wife has consumed poisonous food which he believes is was the rice.

The brand name has been put under the shade due to investigation.

Since the beginning of May this year, social networks across Africa and its Diaspora have been saturated with photos and videos showing horrified people demonstrating the presence of plastic in food items, like rice and eggs. Yet most of these videos don’t have a grain of truth (or plastic) in them.

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has asked members of the Ghanaian public to offer information with respect to suspected plastic rice on the market for appropriate action to be taken.
