Make ICT examinable in SHS – TECHAiDE

Government has been urged to make the study of Information Communication Technology (ICT) an examinable subject in Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country.

According to an ICT company, TECHAiDE, students do not take ICT lessons at SHS level serious, because, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) does not recognise ICT in the West African Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE).

Speaking to Class News after the 2017 Impact Education Conference in Accra, CEO of TECHAiDE Kafui Prebbie emphasised the urgent need for government to pay equal attention to ICT at second cycle institutions.

He said “Government is doing a lot and currently putting a lot of ICT initiatives [in place] and we are privy to that kind of information because we are working closely with the Ministry. However, knowing that when people see there is the need to take an exam, a terminal one, people will put in all the resources.

“So a couple of years ago, take the BECE level, government made it mandatory for most schools to write the exam and we saw the proliferation of technology in schools. Some people who even had no computers went into the open market to get computers and at least, we can say digital literacy is improving in our schools today.

“If we do the same thing at the Senior High School level, it will encourage even Old Students Associations and institutions that can make donations and those organisations will then provide the needed resources for the uptake of ICT in SHS.

“So, we are saying make it an examinable subject and it will drive the schools to look for the technologies and our students will learn better and our education will have a better outcome.”
