Promote road safety campaign – Asiamah

The Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, has called on the media to give the same level of activism given to the fight against illegal small scale mining to road safety. This, he believes, will help raise the level of consciousness among Ghanaians to reduce the road carnage menace.

He said to maintain road safety, there is the need for a committed society and reiterated government’s commitment to renew the mandate of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) and empower it to develop a road safety system that can help reduce crashes in the country.

Opening a three- day, mid-year performance review conference organised by the NRSC in Koforidua, the Transport Minister indicated that the NRSC needed the cooperation of all to enable it come up with more strategies to curb road accidents.

Admitting that bad roads contribute to road carnages in the country, Mr Asiamah assured that the government would scale up effort towards road infrastructure across the country.

On her part, the Executive Director of the Commission, Ing May Obiri-Yeboah, advised road users to abide by road safety regulations in order to protect lives and properties.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Eric Kwakye-Darffour, also expressed worry about the current statistics in the region stating that a total of 255 deaths were recorded in 2014, 229 in 2015, and 347 in 2016 respectively through road accidents.

He said the situation was unpleasant and therefore tasked stakeholders to intensify their engagement with transport unions to bring sanity on the roads to ensure safety.
