Soldiers demolish NDC MP’s 3-storey home

One of several homes flattened by the State Housing Company Limited in the company of soldiers and police officers at Adentan Frafraha on Friday dawn belongs to opposition Member of Parliament (MP) for South Dayi, Nelson Dafeamekpor.

The operation took place at an area called Mile 13.

The MP told Accra-based Joy FM that: “I have been placing a call to the Managing Director [of State Housing Company Limited] since yesterday [Thursday]. I have sent him messages and he would not answer and I have also contacted all the powers that be about this…”

“My colleague MP, Yaw Buabeng Asamoah was here with me this dawn when they came to demolish the structure and he was also helpless. Nobody will answer and it is a very pitiful situation,” he said.

Mr Dafeamekpor suspects he was the sole target of the demolition exercise but a few surrounding structures were also pulled down as a cover-up.

“Look at how the buildings that are before mine were spared because he told me that he placed a call to somebody and that person instructed that that building should be left out.”

He said he will fight those who demolished his building “even if it will take 10 years, I will pursue them in court.”

The homes, flattened by bulldozers included a four-bedroom facility and a single room. A church in the community is also said to have been downed.

The soldiers said the land on which the buildings were put up belonged to government.

One of the owners of the flattened buildings told journalists that the soldiers stormed the area with heavy equipment around 3am without prior warning and began bulldozing structures even though they neither presented a court warrant nor documents to prove the property belonged to the state as they had claimed.

Municipal Chief Executive of the area, Alexander Nii Noi Adumuah, told journalists that the demolition exercise was done on his blind side.

He said the soldiers did not inform the assembly of the exercise but only claimed they were acting on the orders of high authorities.

Mr Adumuah said a gentleman called Sowah was in charge of the demolition.
