Galamsey In Atiwa District Is A Chronic

It seems the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) still remains a major challenge as local indigenes are in support of the crime.
A visit to Akyem Ankaase, Mampong, Muoso, Akrofufu, Akwabouso, Anyinam and Abomosu all in the Atiwa district of the Eastern Region by Radio 1 news correspondent, Oppong Kyekyeku, found operators of chafan machine on the Birim River busily insearching of Gold.

A resident who refused to disclose his identity told Radio 1 news correspondent, Oppong Kyekyeku said that, the situation is alarming since it is alleged to be influenced by some prominent community leaders and traditional heads.
“Even though the Operation Vanguard Team were here, they couldn’t stop their operations because they have informants who always hints miners even before the security get to the scene.

Residents are therefore calling on the Taskforce to take note of the issue and act according as they begin the second phase of their operations.
