Too much of Paracetamol can cause hepatitis B – Dr. Charles Debrah

Dr. Charles Debrah, Medical superintendent of Kukruantumi community hospital in the Eastern Region has stated that 8 -10 paracetamol in a day can cause hepatitis B or can destroy your liver.

According to ‘’who people’’ diagnosed with viral hepatitis often face stigma within their own communities. The level of awareness on hepatitis is very low, and majority of the people are unaware about the situation.

He further explain that, Hepatitis B is a virus that infect the liver. Most adult who get it, have it for a short time and then get better.

In a studio discussion with Akosua Sakyibea Agyewodin the host of ‘Me Ne W’apawomuden’ on  Radio1,Dr. Charles Debrah stated that hepatitis B virus (HBV) can be transmitted through blood, sexual intercourse or other body fluids, also common ways HBV is transmitted include, too much of alcohol and paracetamol.

Signs and symptom includes Tiredness, General aches and pains, a high temperature (fever) of 38c or above, loss of appetite, yellowing of the skin and eyes(Jaundice) and also dark urine and grey-colored.

Most people in the country take risks of sharing needles during intravenous (IV) drug use, having unprotected sex within multiple sex partners or with someone who’s infected with HBV also living with someone has a chronic HBV infection.

How to treat HBV is by Antiviral medication- several antiviral medication including Lamivudine (Epivir), Adefovir (Hesperia) can fight the virus and slow it ability to damage your liver.

Liver Transplant- if your liver has been severely damaged, a liver transplant maybe an option. During a liver transplant, the surgeon remove your damage liver and replace it with a healthy liver.
