A sugarcane farmer in Senchi Ferry in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, Madam Janet Mensah has complained bitterly about the lack of ready markets for their sugarcane products any time they harvested their crops.
Madam Mensah added that the situation has consistently led to some sugarcane farmers defaulting in payment of loans they took from financial institutions to invest in their businesses.
Speaking in an interview with Prince Paul Amuzu, a broadcast journalist with Rite FM, the sugarcane farmer expressed frustration at what she described as government’s lack of interest in sugarcane production in the country, adding that this show of apathy towards the sub-sector is equally extended to the creation of market avenues for the product after harvesting.
“We have never heard government saying anything concerning sugarcane production in this country let alone thinking of markets for our sugarcane produce after harvesting,” Madam Mensah bemoaned.
According to her, agriculture is the bed rock of the economy and government must fully prioritize its investment in the Agric sector by taking every aspect of farming seriously.
She said government only paid attention to some particular types of farming while other types such as the sugarcane farming suffered; a situation she argued should not be the case.
She has therefore pleaded with the government to take them (sugarcane farmers) seriously by investing in the industry as they are capable of producing more in commercial quantities to serve as raw material for the Komenda sugar factory and even more for exportation.
