The Co-founder and Manager of Adepa Evelyn Africa Initiative, Samuel Wonder has disclosed that Ghana can create international market, generate money through hard plastic waste recycling (PET Bottles) , make the country an environment free, make our stagnant water bodies clean and improve on our health system.
He made this known on Tuesday 27th November 2018, on Radio1 100.7’s show Our Land Our Future.
According to Mr. Wonder, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has stated that Ghana can generate an amount of about GHS 83billion from waste if the country is ready to do recycling plastic waste products, PET bottles because about thirty thousand tons of solid wastes are made every day in which about 86% of it are recoverable through recycling.
Samuel noted that plastic waste bottles that are collected are being exported to other countries and they are recycled into other different products such as dustbins, poly tanks, whereby it can be recycled here in Ghana and as at now Ghana does not have any recognized factory that recycles hard plastic waste products (PET Bottles) but the Government can help establish one in the country.
However, he said the A.E. Africa Initiative and other Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are ready to partner with the Government to bring ideas together on how this can be achieved. He noted that since a lot of revenue can be made of plastic waste recycling (PET Bottles), we have to start embarking on creating the awareness collecting plastic bottles (PET bottles)
“We have started a pilot project in different towns so that when we are able to create the market, it will alert the Government to invest some money into it”
Mr. Samuel added that, A.E. Africa Initiative has trained some people on collecting plastic bottles because International Organizations are ready to come in to buy the tonnages if Ghana is able to create forty thousand tons a year which will create market for people in the country. He said since the Government has keen interest in youth entrepreneurship in the country, attention can be directed to entrepreneurship in plastic waste management (PET Bottles) which is known as Trash for Cash.
He believes that with the One District One Factory (1D1F) when it is piloted, in a span of about three to five years if the international market is created for the plastic waste recycling it can generate revenue.
