2020 Review: MTN Ghana Commits GHS100m To Complement Government’s Efforts In Fighting Covid-19

The largest telecommunication giant in Ghana, Mobile Telecommunication Network (MTN) as part of its responsibility to help contain the spread of the deadly novel coronavirus pandemic, i.e. Covid-19 has committed one hundred million Ghana cedis (GHS100m) to complement the government’s effort to mitigate the effects of the pandemic in Ghana.

This was revealed during virtual editors forum organized by the most successful telecommunication network in Ghana on Monday 28th September 2020 under the theme, “MTN Ghana: Delivering a bold and bright digital experience”.

Driven by the ‘BRIGHT’ strategy in becoming a digital operator by end of 2023, MTN Ghana acknowledged that 2020 has been a very challenging year which came as a result not only by the outbreak of the deadly novel Covid-19 but also major outages from January to February example being undersea cable outage for 3 days.

However, the company committed a whooping GHS100m to support the combat against Covid-19. The said support reached out to Staff, Customers and government and the breakdown is as follows; GHS29m on staff, GHS72m on customers and GHS6m on government.

Staff

Supply of PPEs for all frontline staff, 45 buses arranged for frontline staff
transportation, Welfare fund established that raised GhS320k from 260+ staff, ~800 extended workforce staff have benefited from the welfare fund
Staff Covid-19 awareness and training (Videos, email, SMS, Online), Daily health monitor survey to capture data to support staff at risk, At peak ~90% of staff were working from home on a daily basis.

Customers

Network resilience (50% increase in Intl bandwidth, 100 new sites), Free access (zero-rate) to over 200 educational websites, 4.5m customers, consuming over 150 Terabytes of data, Free MoMo P2P transfers up to
GhS100 daily, and Free Covid-19 news channel on ayoba super app.

Government

Free access (zero rate) of the Smart, Workplace portal for all GoG workers, Donation of GhS5m of PPEs for frontline health workers, Donation of 10 TurboNet devices with over 2 Terabytes of data to MOI, Free access to shortcodes for Covid19 response for MOI and GHS, Customer education including (SMS, CRBT, BE WISE campaign etc.), Donation of digital equipment to Noguchi Memorial worth GhS42k,and Distribution of 85k masks to various hospitals and clinics nationwide.

Just as the slogan MTN network is ubiquitous and inarguably the most used network in Ghana.
