Kenyan Students Stranded At Night Over Curfew

Some Kenyan high school finalists were left stranded in the capital Nairobi on Monday night as police enforced a curfew by closing roads.

Students had been exempted from the new regulations that locked down the capital and nearby counties – preventing movement to and from other counties.

But some of them, who were coming from boarding schools outside the capital after completing their national examinations, sought refuge at a park in the city due to a shortage of public transport.

Some of the students asked private motorists for lifts while carrying their metal boxes and mattresses:

Over the weekend, police closed roads for hours at night insisting that the motorists who were out by curfew time would spend the night on the road.

Motorists have blamed ongoing roadworks across the city for traffic jams leading to delays on the road – but the police say motorists are to blame for not planning their journeys early enough.
