The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice has filed fresh charges against Nana Appiah Mensah, popularly known as NAM 1, the CEO of the defunct Menzgold company.
As a result, all previous charges against him have been withdrawn.
The Director of Prosecution, Yvonne Atakora, explained that amendments to some figures in the case necessitated the filing of new charges, emphasising that this decision was made in the interest of justice.
The case has been adjourned to December 4, 2023, to give NAM1’s legal team adequate time to review the new charges.
This adjournment was requested by NAM1’s lawyers and agreed upon by the state attorney.
In response to security concerns, the presiding judge has directed the court administration to enhance security measures at the court entrance.
This directive follows an incident in which NAM1’s Public Relations Officer (PRO) was reportedly assaulted after a previous court hearing.
Menzgold, which suspended operations in 2018, faced accusations of running a Ponzi scheme, leading to aggrieved customers seeking the release of their funds.
Nana Appiah Mensah is currently on trial for allegedly defrauding over 16,000 people of GH¢1.68 billion.
The government, however, refuted NAM1’s claims that he deposited GH¢5 million with the Ghana Police Service, revealing that only GH¢2.5 million was received.
The Ghana Police Service has subsequently deposited this amount with the Bank of Ghana.
