E/R: Angry youth lashes corpse of alleged sakawa boy

New Abirem, a community situated in the Birim North District of the Eastern region, is currently facing the aftermath of a disturbing incident that transpired on Wednesday, November 8, 2023.

Malik Abacha, a man believed to be in his late 30s, met a tragic fate at the hands of enraged youth who subjected his lifeless body to brutal treatment. The distressing occurrence stemmed from a reported misunderstanding between the youth and the family of the deceased.

Accusations of Malik’s involvement in illicit activities, including money rituals (Sakawa) and other crimes within the area, intensified the anger of the youth. This anger prompted them to take matters into their own hands, obstructing the burial of the deceased.

Despite the family’s awareness of the youth’s intentions, efforts were made to proceed with Malik’s burial by enlisting the assistance of bouncers and the police. However, tensions escalated, leading to a confrontation with the angry youth who set up roadblocks to prevent the burial.

The intervention of the Abirem District Police commander became necessary to restore order. Unfortunately, despite attempts to maintain peace, the situation took a dark turn during the burial proceedings at the cemetery.

In a disturbing incident captured on video, the coffin bearing the inscription “Holy Bible” was forcefully knocked to the ground, and Malik’s lifeless body was mercilessly attacked by the angry mob. The coffin lay destroyed as the deceased was subjected to a shocking assault.

A member of the bereaved family strongly condemned the act, expressing vehement disapproval of the violent demonstration by the youth. This family representative emphasized the unacceptability of such actions and called for a thorough investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.

The community is now grappling with the repercussions of this deeply troubling incident.
