Charles Owusu has lacerated the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, over her defence of decriminalizing the sale of sex toys in Ghana.
Parliament is at a crossroads over criminalizing the activities of the LGBTQ+ community, as a section of the members of the House stands against the passing of the anti-gay bill into law.
The anti-gay bill, when passed, will ensure any person who commits a homosexual act or professes support for homosexual practices faces a jail term, a fine, or both.
As the bill is currently being deliberated on the floor of Parliament, the Communications Minister established her position on a portion of it that makes selling sex toys a crime.
Clause 3(c) of the bill prohibits sexual intercourse between a man and an inanimate object or between a woman and an inanimate object, but according to the Minister, criminalizing the use of sex toys will affect heterosexual couples who use sex toys to enhance their sex lives.
“I think we raised this when the committee was considering it that the proposed amendment in 3(c) may create unintended consequences because sexual intercourse between a man and an inanimate object or between a woman and an inanimate object would necessarily include sexual intercourse with all manner of aids that couple use to enhance the sexual experience.
“And I’m not sure if that’s what the intention of this bill is. It would necessarily include sex toys and other aids that couples, especially heterosexual couples, also use to enhance their sexual experience.
“So if that is what the house intends, then we have to be clear in our minds that we may be criminalising activities, which may not necessarily be limited to only those LGBTQI communities that the target of this bill is but it may also be targeting straight couples who use sex enhancement tools to enhance their sexual experience,” she argued, insisting that “we need to be mindful of the unintended consequences of 3(c), and I’ll propose that 3(c) be deleted from this amendment.”.
Charles Owusu, in his reaction to Hon. Ursula’s assertions, noted on Peace FM’s morning show “Kokrokoo” that the use of sex toys is as abominable as the practices of homosexuals.
He called on the lawmakers to disregard Ursula Owusu’s call and sternly demanded that “the law must prohibit the sale of sex toys publicly.”
He charged Ghanaians to vote against any Parliamentarian who supports the LGBTQ+ community or goes against the passage of the Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill 2021, otherwise referred to as the “anti-gay bill.”
“How dare you tell us to allow women to marry women in this country? Who are you?” he fumed.
“I mean, what is this? It’s dirty and annoying! It is an abomination before God. Vote against them! he further exclaimed.
