E/R: Commercial driver dies in police custody

A sick commercial motorist who was detained by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) at the Eastern Regional Police headquarters in Koforidua for a traffic violation has passed away.

The driver, who was detained by the police for a moving infraction, allegedly reported feeling ill.

MTTD officers, however, believed he was lying about being ill to avoid being looked into and prosecuted.

Sadly, the driver passed away in detention despite his best efforts and worsening health.

Even though he was taken to the hospital right away, they declared him dead.

According to sources, the driver had been ill for a while yet kept working.

The episode highlights the need for enhanced protocols and sensitivity when dealing with inmates, especially individuals who may be facing health concerns, even though the police could not be accused of foul conduct.

The circumstances surrounding the driver’s death should be looked into to stop tragedies like this one from happening again.
