Eastern Regional Hospital receives boost in blood after shortage announcement

In response to the pressing need for blood transfusions, the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua has received a significant boost in its blood supply. Despite ongoing shortages, the recent “Save a Life Blood Donation Exercise” organized by the MTN Ghana Foundation saw a remarkable turnout of donors.

The event, held at Koforidua Technical Institute (KOTECH), attracted both students and teachers eager to contribute to the cause.

Highlighting the critical importance of such initiatives, Philomena Quayson, the Eastern Regional Blood Donor Coordinator, emphasized the increasing demand for blood transfusions and dispelled common misconceptions surrounding blood donation.

He said the Eastern Regional Hospital requires a minimum of 150 units of blood for life-saving blood transfusions every week.

Ransford Gyan, Sales Manager for the Eastern, Volta, and Oti Regions, underscored the significance of collective efforts in addressing persistent blood shortages and ensuring a reliable supply for patients in need.

The success of the recent blood donation exercise, which collected approximately 250 pints of blood, marks a significant step forward in bolstering the Eastern Regional Blood Bank’s stock.

Since its inception on Valentine’s Day in 2011, the “Save a Life Blood Donation Exercise” has played a crucial role in replenishing blood banks across the country, with over 26,000 units of blood collected to date.

As the demand for blood continues to outstrip the available supply, initiatives like these remain essential in saving lives and supporting healthcare systems nationwide.
