Awuley Quaye: Family inform GFA of death of Ghana legend

The family of the late former Black Stars captain, Emmanuel Awuley Quaye, has officially informed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) of his demise during a visit to President Kurt Okraku.

Led by his son, Awuley Quaye Jnr, the family conveyed details surrounding Awuley Quaye’s passing and discussed plans for his upcoming funeral.

At the GFA Headquarters, they were warmly received by President Kurt Okraku, Executive Council member Nana Sarfo Oduro, Head of Public Relations and Strategy Neil Armstrong-Mortagbe, Human Resource Manager Keziah Afosa, and Director of the GFA Foundation Malcolm Frazier Appeadu.

Awuley Quaye, a renowned figure in Ghanaian football, passed away on Monday, March 25, 2024. His funeral has been scheduled for May 3-4, 2024.

President Okraku praised the deceased’s significant contributions to Ghanaian football, expressing condolences on behalf of the Football Association and offering full support to the family during this difficult time.

“This funeral is our funeral, and we’ll work closely with you (the family) to ensure we give him the respect that he deserves,” President Okraku assured. “We’ll inform Government, through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, about the unfortunate news of his passing and ensure we give him a befitting burial.”

Awuley Quaye’s legacy in Ghanaian football is marked by his leadership as captain of the national team during their triumph in the 1978 Africa Cup of Nations. He was also a revered figure at Ghanaian Premier League club Great Olympics, contributing significantly to their domestic successes in the 1970s.

His indomitable spirit, leadership qualities, and passion for the sport will forever be cherished by the football community. Awuley Quaye’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in Ghanaian football, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
