Nima residents more compliable than those in rich areas

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) Samuel Dubik Mahama has described residents of Nima as the most exciting and comfortable people to work with.

His claims are contrary to widely held perception by a large section of the public that Nima residents are very difficult to handle hence staff of ECG fear to embark on disconnection exercise in the area.

Nima, a surburb of Accra is a densely populated area with improper planning and spacing as houses most buildings are very small in size and are closely built to each other, causing lack of ventilation forcing some residents to fix air conditioners in their rooms.

It is believed that Nima is one place illegal electricity connection is very high, but the place is said to be a no-go area for ECG staff as they fear they’ll be physically attacked if they embark on a disconnection exercise.

But speaking to Bola Ray on Starr Chat on Starr FM, the ECG Boss stated that, that perception of Nima is very wrong.

”We do go to Nima, and my best experience was in Nima through revenue mobilization. They are the most comfortable and exciting people to work with. I am not joking, they comply. They are so relatable. The man goes like… I do am, so charley whatsup? they give off the vibe different from what everybody is expecting. Shukura and Russia, they are the fun place to work, you can ask ECG staff.

Asked which area is the most difficult for ECG staff to work in, Samuel Dubik Mahama responded: ”the rich people areas, I will not mention names. Let me tell you something, it is not even about the dogs thing, the rich people areas can also be called I know my rights areas. Because he knows his right he feels like he doesn’t have to let you in on his compound but the truth of the matter is that, the law allows me to enter because I have a property (meter) on your compound. Funny enough, eight out of ten, there’s something wrong with that house. The rich people areas…Now, we’ve also developed a policy for the rich people areas who give us problems, we try once, twice and since we didn’t see the metter, it means the metter in our head is faulty, so we disconnect from the wood pole. We are allowed to do that, we are service provider, if I cannot check the integrity of my service, why should I allow it to keep running. In their minds they’ll say I will sue you, okay, go and sue. That is when the law will be opened for you to know that the meter has to be visited. So the staff will disconnect from the service cable and when they disconnect, you will come and pay reconnection fee.”
