President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the reconstruction of the La General Hospital will be completed and ready for commissioning by November 2027.

The assurance follows a site inspection by the President, who was accompanied by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. During the visit, President Mahama commended contractors and workers for the steady pace of work, urging them to sustain momentum to meet the projected timeline.
He noted that the prolonged closure of the facility has placed considerable strain on nearby health institutions, underscoring the urgency of completing the project to restore access to quality healthcare for residents in La and adjoining communities.

As part of interim measures, the President disclosed plans to repurpose the COVID-19 emergency centre at Burma Camp to handle urgent cases and ease pressure on existing facilities.

He also highlighted the government’s broader commitment to preventive healthcare through the recently introduced Free Primary Healthcare initiative.

Providing an update on the project, the Health Minister explained that although redevelopment began in 2020, progress was stalled due to funding and payment challenges. Work, however, resumed fully in 2025 after outstanding issues were resolved.
Upon completion, the hospital is expected to serve more than 50,000 residents, significantly enhancing healthcare delivery in the capital.
