President John Dramani Mahama has cut  sod for the construction of a 24-hour economy market in Bimbilla as part of his “Resetting Ghana” tour of the Northern Region, fulfilling a key pledge outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto.

The project forms part of a nationwide initiative to establish modern market facilities across all 261 districts, aimed at promoting round-the-clock economic activity, strengthening local commerce, and improving linkages between agricultural production and market access.

Speaking at the sod-cutting ceremony, H.E Mahama underscored the critical role markets play in Ghana’s economy, describing them as essential hubs for trade and the circulation of money. He noted that agricultural productivity without reliable access to markets diminishes the economic value of farm produce, stressing the need to effectively connect farms, markets, and households.

The Bimbilla market, identified as one of the largest model facilities under the programme, will feature ten warehouses, a clinic, fire and police posts, banking services, crèche facilities, and food outlets.

These additions are expected to support continuous operations while enhancing safety and convenience for both traders and consumers.

Given Bimbilla’s strong agricultural base—particularly in yam, maize, beans, and groundnut production—the facility is anticipated to reduce post-harvest losses, stabilise prices during peak seasons, and boost farmer incomes through improved processing and distribution channels.

President Mahama further indicated that the project would generate employment opportunities and strengthen the agricultural value chain. He called for high-quality execution to ensure the market serves future generations, adding that the District Assembly will oversee its maintenance and management through a dedicated market administration system.

Addressing concerns surrounding the Free Primary Health Care programme, he clarified that tricycles and motorbikes being distributed are not ambulances, but are intended to support outreach services, vaccination delivery, and community-based preventive healthcare.
