Ghana is set to strengthen its position in the global gold industry with plans to establish one of the world’s largest gold refineries, according to the Chief Executive Officer of GoldBod, Sammy Gyamfi.

Mr. Gyamfi revealed that GoldBod is in the final stages of securing a landmark agreement for the construction of a state-of-the-art gold refinery with a processing capacity of 600 tonnes. Once completed, the facility is expected to rank among the largest gold refineries in Africa and compete within the top tier of refining operations globally.

Speaking during a high-level engagement with the National House of Chiefs in the Ashanti Region on Friday, May 29, 2026, Mr. Gyamfi said the project forms part of the government’s broader strategy to transform Ghana into Africa’s leading gold refining hub.

“We are in the process of signing a new agreement that will lead to the establishment of what will be one of the biggest gold refineries in the world right here in Ghana,” he said.

“We expect to cut sod for the project this year and complete construction by next year. The refinery will have a capacity of 600 tonnes and will be able to process all the gold produced in Ghana, as well as gold from neighbouring countries such as Burkina Faso and Togo. The vision is to make Ghana a major gold refining hub in the region.”

The planned refinery is expected to significantly boost local value addition within Ghana’s gold sector by enabling the country to refine its gold domestically rather than exporting raw bullion for processing abroad.

Industry observers believe the project could enhance foreign exchange earnings, create employment opportunities, reduce capital flight, and strengthen Ghana’s influence in the global precious metals value chain.

If completed as scheduled in 2027, the refinery is expected to become a key pillar of the country’s efforts to maximize returns from its mineral resources and position Ghana as a leading destination for gold refining in Africa.
