Friday, June 26, 2026 | UPSA, Accra – The Chief of Staff, Hon. Julius Debrah, has warned that drug abuse and illicit trafficking pose a serious threat to Ghana’s national security, public health, and socio-economic development, calling for intensified efforts to combat the growing menace.

Delivering the Government of Ghana’s statement at the 2026 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking commemorative event in Accra, Hon. Debrah described the global drug problem as an evolving crisis that continues to fuel organised crime, undermine public safety, and devastate communities.

He stressed that drug abuse has become more than a law enforcement issue, noting that it is now a major public health challenge with far-reaching consequences for individuals, families, and the nation as a whole.

The Chief of Staff underscored the government’s commitment to strengthening policies, enhancing collaboration among security agencies, and investing in prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programmes to protect citizens from the harmful effects of illicit drugs.

He further called on all stakeholders—including government institutions, civil society organisations, educational institutions, traditional authorities, religious leaders, and the public—to work together in addressing the root causes of drug abuse and dismantling illicit drug trafficking networks.

Hon. Debrah reaffirmed the government’s determination to safeguard Ghana’s future by promoting a drug-free society and ensuring the safety, health, and well-being of all citizens.
