Ghana and South Korea have signed their first-ever visa waiver agreement for holders of diplomatic and service passports, nearly five decades after establishing diplomatic relations.

The landmark agreement was signed on the sidelines of the 2026 Korea, Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Seoul by Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and South Korea’s Foreign Minister, Cho Tae-yul.

The deal is expected to facilitate official travel between the two countries while strengthening diplomatic cooperation, trade relations, and broader bilateral engagement.

Announcing the development on June 1, 2026, Mr. Ablakwa described the agreement as a significant milestone in Ghana, South Korea relations, noting that discussions are already underway to extend the arrangement to ordinary passport holders.

“Negotiations will continue to bring on board holders of Ordinary Passports,” he stated.

Mr. Ablakwa said the agreement reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to deepen cooperation and aligns with priorities identified during President John Mahama’s working visit to South Korea in March this year.

As part of the ceremony, the Ghanaian minister presented his South Korean counterpart with a customised Ghanaian coat of arms and locally produced Ghanaian chocolate as a symbol of friendship and goodwill.

The visa waiver agreement marks a new chapter in relations between Ghana and South Korea and is expected to promote closer collaboration across various sectors in the years ahead.
