The government has officially commissioned a 20-member Greater Accra Public Lands Protection Taskforce to strengthen efforts aimed at protecting state-owned lands from illegal occupation, encroachment, and unauthorized construction activities across the region.

The taskforce was inaugurated in Accra on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, who stressed that safeguarding public lands remains a vital national obligation.

The team brings together representatives from the Lands Commission, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Armed Forces, and the private sector.

Addressing attendees at the inauguration ceremony, the Minister described the protection of public lands as “a critical national responsibility.”

He explained that state lands are important national assets set aside for infrastructure projects, public services, and other initiatives that drive the country’s development agenda. However, he noted that unlawful occupation and encroachment on such lands have, over the years, denied the nation significant resources and disrupted planned development projects.

The taskforce is expected to play a key role in preserving public lands and ensuring that government properties are protected for their intended purposes.
