Accra, June 10, 2026 – The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC), chaired by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, has announced heightened security and emergency preparedness measures across the region as authorities brace for the peak of the rainy season and the upcoming Homowo Festival.
The decision follows an emergency review of flood-prone areas and security concerns associated with the annual cultural celebrations. According to REGSEC, a comprehensive strategy has been developed to mitigate flood risks, protect lives and property, and ensure peaceful festivities throughout the region.

The Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) has classified several communities as priority areas for intervention.
Critical-risk areas include Odawna Sahara and Adabraka Official Town in the Korle Klottey Municipality.
High-risk flashpoints identified include Alajo Central (D.K. Poison/Polo Park), Berlin Bridge, the Downside Area in Ayawaso North and East, Jelil Estate Junction, Baba Yara Area and Akorli Down in Madina, Osu Alata, Osu Doku, and the Abelemkpe Methodist Church vicinity.
Authorities have also placed several locations under heightened monitoring, including parts of Weija-Gbawe, Ga West and Ga East, particularly communities around major drainage channels and river catchment areas.
Enhanced Sanitation and Drainage Operations
The Regional Minister has directed all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to intensify sanitation activities and clear blocked drains, waterways and illegal waste dumps to improve water flow and reduce the risk of flooding.
The exercise forms part of a broader preventive strategy aimed at strengthening the region’s resilience before the heaviest rains arrive.
Security Measures for Homowo Celebrations
REGSEC has also announced enhanced security arrangements for the Homowo Festival. Security agencies will increase patrols and intelligence operations across traditional areas to prevent disturbances linked to chieftaincy and land disputes.
The Ghana National Fire Service, emergency response teams and other security agencies have coordinated plans for crowd management, traffic control and emergency response during the festivities.
Residents Urged to Remain Vigilant
Residents living in flood-prone communities have been advised to remain alert and comply with safety directives issued by authorities.

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has identified safe shelters and stands ready to facilitate emergency evacuations where necessary.
Speaking on the measures, Hon. Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting lives and maintaining public safety.
“The safety and well-being of our citizens remain our foremost priority. Government, through the Regional Coordinating Council, the security services, NADMO and all relevant stakeholders, is fully committed to preventing disasters and safeguarding communities. We urge all residents to cooperate with authorities, observe safety precautions and promptly report emergencies through the appropriate channels.”

The Regional Minister assured the public that all relevant agencies remain on high alert and fully prepared to respond to emergencies throughout the rainy season and during the Homowo celebrations.
