Heavy rainfall that started late on Sunday, June 28, and continued into Monday morning, June 29, 2026, has caused flooding across several parts of Accra, leaving many commuters stranded and creating major traffic disruptions.
Floodwaters covered key roads and low-lying communities, making several routes difficult to use. While some motorists carefully drove through the flooded streets, others were forced to turn around after roads became impassable.
The flooding also affected homes and businesses in vulnerable communities, with residents and shop owners rushing to protect their belongings as water entered their buildings.
The situation significantly disrupted the Monday morning commute, as waterlogged roads and heavy congestion delayed thousands of people travelling to work and school.

Authorities have advised motorists to avoid flooded roads and urged residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant and relocate to safer locations if conditions deteriorate.
Accra continues to face recurring flooding during heavy rains, largely due to poor drainage systems, indiscriminate disposal of waste into drains, and rapid urbanisation. Emergency officials are expected to assess the extent of the damage as floodwaters recede.
