The Ministry of Health has intensified its response to public health risks arising from the recent flooding in parts of Accra, with the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, leading field assessments in some of the worst-affected communities.

The Minister visited Circle VIP, Neoplan Station, and the Achimota-Aloboshie community to assess the situation firsthand, facilitate the rapid deployment of health interventions, and strengthen efforts to prevent the outbreak of flood-related diseases.

As part of the response, the Minister has directed the Ghana Health Service to intensify disease surveillance, expand public risk communication, and reinforce community-level health interventions across all affected districts.

Health workers have also been tasked to step up public education on preventive health practices, with support from the media, traditional and religious leaders, and educational institutions.

To address urgent water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) challenges, the Ministry has convened a coordinated response involving the Ghana Health Service, the National Ambulance Service, Faith-Based Service Delivery Agencies, the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), and the Ministry of Local Government.

The Ministry has further called on all Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to work closely with health authorities to enforce environmental sanitation measures aimed at reducing public health risks.

Food vendors have been reminded to strictly observe food hygiene standards, while residents are encouraged to clear choked drains, eliminate stagnant water, and maintain clean surroundings.

The Ministry also cautioned the public to remain vigilant, noting that flooding could force reptiles and other dangerous animals into residential communities.

While assuring Ghanaians that the situation remains under control, the Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining uninterrupted healthcare services throughout the affected areas.

The public is advised to practice good personal hygiene by drinking safe water, washing hands regularly with soap and water, consuming well-cooked food, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms of illness develop.

The Ministry further urged citizens to rely only on verified information from official sources as efforts continue to safeguard public health following the floods.
