The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs (MLGCRA), in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission, has undertaken a major beach clean-up exercise at the La Dade-Kotopon coastline as part of activities commemorating the regional bloc’s 50th Anniversary.

The exercise, which formed part of the June edition of the National Sanitation Day campaign, brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including Mutual Finance, Tide Turners, Mayekoo, the Green Africa Youth Organization (GAYO), the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, the Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership, the National Cadet Corps Ghana, and several volunteer groups.
Participants engaged in sweeping, waste collection, and clearing operations along the beach and surrounding communities, removing large quantities of plastic waste and other debris. The exercise highlighted the growing environmental threat posed by indiscriminate waste disposal and the urgent need for sustained action to protect the country’s coastal ecosystems.

Addressing participants after the clean-up, the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Rita Naa Odoley Sowah, commended the various institutions, organizations, and volunteers for their commitment to improving environmental sanitation.
She urged citizens to maintain the momentum by adopting responsible waste management practices and environmentally sustainable lifestyles, stressing that lasting improvements in sanitation require collective effort and continuous public engagement.

The initiative reaffirmed the commitment of government, ECOWAS, and partnering organizations to promoting cleaner, healthier communities while advancing environmental sustainability and responsible waste management across the country.
