The Ministry of Health (MoH) has strengthened its efforts to eliminate onchocerciasis (river blindness) through a strategic partnership with the Noor Dubai Foundation, aimed at sustaining progress in the fight against the disease despite global funding challenges.

The partnership was discussed during a meeting between the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the Chief Executive Officer of the Noor Dubai Foundation, Dr. Manal Taryam.

Dr. Taryam revealed that the Foundation, which operates under the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, has been active in Ghana since 2009, primarily supporting cataract surgeries in Tamale. She noted that the programme currently targets up to 5,000 beneficiaries annually.

She further announced that the Foundation is expanding its health interventions beyond eye care to support Ghana’s campaign to eliminate onchocerciasis, with the initiative receiving the personal backing of the Ruler of Dubai.

Hon. Akandoh welcomed the partnership and directed technical teams from the Ministry to expedite all processes related to the collaboration. He stressed the importance of adhering to implementation timelines to ensure Ghana remains on course to achieve its national elimination targets.

According to the Minister, eliminating operational bottlenecks and strengthening coordination among stakeholders will be crucial to achieving nationwide coverage and lasting success.

He also highlighted Ghana’s significant progress in combating neglected tropical diseases, describing the country as a strong partner in the global fight against onchocerciasis. He expressed confidence that, through sustained commitment and effective collaboration, Ghana can eliminate the disease by 2030.
