The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a flood alert for residents of Accra, Tema and Kasoa following hours of heavy rainfall that caused widespread flooding in several communities on Monday morning.

In a flood advisory released at 7:30 a.m. on Monday, June 29, 2026, NADMO confirmed that the three areas had been affected by flooding and urged residents and commuters to remain vigilant.

“Flooding is currently being recorded in Tema, Accra, and Kasoa areas,” the organisation stated.

NADMO advised the public to avoid flood-prone and low-lying areas and cautioned against driving or walking through flooded roads. It also urged residents to “move to higher ground immediately if water is rising around you” and to “keep children and elderly away from waterways and drains.”

The organisation further appealed to the public to report stranded persons or emergencies through its emergency lines: 0302964884, 0291913077, or the national emergency number 112.

“Stay safe. Stay informed. Avoid unnecessary travel until the situation improves,” NADMO added.

The alert follows prolonged rainfall that began late on Sunday, June 28, and continued into Monday morning, leaving several parts of Accra and surrounding communities waterlogged and disrupting the morning commute.

Floodwaters submerged major roads, forcing motorists to navigate through difficult conditions while others turned back after some routes became impassable. The heavy rains also caused severe traffic congestion, delaying thousands of people travelling to work and school.

In some low-lying communities, homes and businesses were inundated, prompting residents and shop owners to move their belongings to safer locations.

Accra continues to experience recurring floods during heavy rains, with poor drainage systems, indiscriminate waste disposal into drains, and rapid urbanisation identified as key factors contributing to the persistent problem.
